The Supreme Court of India is increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools into its case management processes. AI-assisted transcription of oral arguments in Constitution Bench cases is now accessible on the court’s website, with plans to extend transcription to regular hearing days.

In collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), AI-powered tools are also being used to translate judgments from English into 18 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Urdu. These translations are available on the eSCR portal. Additionally, in partnership with IIT Madras, the court has introduced AI-assisted electronic filing software to identify defects in legal filings, granting prototype access to 200 Advocates-on-Record for feedback. This information was shared by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

The court is also testing AI for metadata extraction and automated error detection within the Integrated Case Management and Information System (ICMIS). However, AI and ML are not being used in judicial decision-making. The Supreme Court Portal Assistance in Court Efficiency (SUPACE), an AI-driven tool designed to analyze case facts and search legal precedents, remains in an experimental phase. Its implementation depends on procuring advanced computing resources.
