Nine people have been arrested and two senior police officers suspended following the deaths linked to a spurious liquor racket in Punjab’s Majitha region, the state police confirmed on Tuesday. The death of 14 people in the liquor tragedy has sparked sharp criticism of local police over alleged negligence.

The Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, said the arrests include the alleged kingpin of the operation and several local distributors involved in the illegal trade. The deadly concoction, he said, was manufactured using methanol procured through online channels.

“These arrests are just the beginning,” Yadav said. “The investigation is focused on uncovering the full extent of the network and ensuring that every individual involved is brought to justice.”

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for Majitha Subdivision and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Majitha Police Station have both been suspended for “gross negligence,” the DGP confirmed. Departmental inquiries have also been launched, he added.
