Chandigarh, July 24
As the nation marks 26 years since the Kargil war, a unique tribute will unfold on the streets of Chandigarh this Saturday. Over 500 runners — including wheelchair-bound athletes and specially-abled participants — will take part in the SJOBA Marathon 2025, commemorating Kargil Vijay Diwas and celebrating the indomitable spirit of legendary centenarian runner Fauja Singh.
Organised by the St John’s Old Boys Association (SJOBA), the marathon seeks to channel a message of peace, unity, and resilience under the banner: “Run for the Armed Forces, Run for Peace, Run for the Planet.” It will kick off at 5am from St John’s High School, with four distances on offer — 21km, 10km, 5km, and 3km — open to all age groups.
This year’s event is dedicated to Late Fauja Singh, whose incredible journey — running marathons well past the age of 100 — became a global symbol of endurance. His legacy adds emotional weight to an event already steeped in national pride.
Unveiling the marathon plans at a press briefing, SJOBA President Harpal Singh Malvai was joined by dignitaries including Founder President Mac Sarin and ex-president SPS Ghai. Sanjeev Agarwal, MD of title sponsor Scott Edil, joined the event’s official T-shirt launch.
Col Harpreet Singh Mann (Retd), the race director, outlined the elaborate safety and logistics protocol in place: marshals along key junctions, secured crossings, ambulances on standby, and hydration points throughout the course. Participants will be awarded medals, goodie bags, and post-run breakfasts, with trophies recognising winners across categories, and special mentions for the youngest and oldest runners.
Founded as the alumni network of St John’s High School, SJOBA is renowned for its socially engaged initiatives — from scholarships and mentorship to health outreach. Their annual motor rally is a marquee fixture on India’s motorsport calendar, and the marathon builds on that reputation, blending athletic ambition with civic consciousness.
Backed by co-sponsor Rahi Care and supporters such as Indian Oil, Fortis, Coca-Cola (Kandhari Beverages), HDFC Bank, and Verka, this year’s event underscores SJOBA’s commitment to honouring the armed forces while fostering an inclusive, community-rooted sporting culture.
