Shimla, October 9
A festive atmosphere gripped Shimla on Thursday as women thronged the city’s markets to shop for Karva Chauth, an auspicious festival observed by married women across India. Despite light rain and chilly weather, the enthusiasm among women remained high. From Lower Bazaar to Mall Road, shops selling bangles, puja materials, designer thalis and other festive accessories were packed with customers. Women were seen buying decorative items, solah shringar products and essentials for the evening rituals.
According to astrologer Shashi Pal Dogra, the moon will be visible in Shimla at 8:07 pm. The Karva Chauth tithi begins at 10:54 pm on October 9 and ends at 7:37 pm on October 10. This year, the festival coincides with the rare conjunction of Siddhi Yog and Shivvas Yog, occurring together after 200 years.
Many women said the fast is observed for the long life and well-being of their husbands. On Karva Chauth, married women observe a day-long nirjala fast (without food or water) and break it after sighting the moon and performing rituals. According to tradition, the festival is believed to strengthen marital bonds and bring happiness to married life.
Adding to the festivities, the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation announced a 10% special discount for married couples staying at its hotels on October 9 and 10. It will also offer complimentary sargi and puja thalis to guests celebrating the festival.
