The long-awaited ropeway and rapid transport system in Shimla has received Stage-1 forest clearance under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said the project will mark a “historic milestone” in the city’s urban transport system. The ropeway will cover a stretch of 13.79 kilometres, connecting key locations across Shimla. With an estimated cost of ₹1,734.70 crore, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce pollution and offer a sustainable green transport solution.

The Ministry has given in-principle approval for the use of 6.19 hectares of forest land, with all environmental and legal norms to be followed during construction. Agnihotri said the project will create new employment opportunities for locals and offer tourists a new travel experience. Calling it a “big gift” for the people of Shimla, the deputy chief minister said the ropeway aligns with the state government’s vision of a “Green and Modern Himachal”. He thanked the Centre and the environment ministry for fast-tracking the approval.

He also assured that environmental safeguards will be given top priority and all construction will follow forest department guidelines. The ropeway system, he added, will ease pressure on roads, cut carbon emissions and boost clean urban mobility.
