Ludhiana, June 23

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Sanjeev Arora was leading by 7,504 votes over his nearest rival, Congress’s Bharat Bhushan Ashu, after the 11th round of counting in the Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll on Monday. The election, held on June 19, followed the death of sitting AAP legislator Gurpreet Singh Gogi.  Arora is in a four-way contest, facing former Punjab minister Ashu from the Congress, Jiwan Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Parupkar Singh Ghumman of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The outcome will serve as a mid-term temperature check for all major political parties ahead of the 2027 state elections.

Despite the high-stakes battle, Ludhiana West recorded the lowest voter turnout among the five constituencies that went to bypolls last week, with just 51.33% of registered voters casting their ballot.
