The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall across six districts of Himachal Pradesh as downpours continue to disrupt daily life. The warning covers Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur. In response, the state government has ordered all schools and colleges to remain closed, with teachers instructed to hold online classes from home.

The state disaster management authority reported that, as of Monday morning, five national highways and 788 other roads were blocked, 2,174 power transformers were out of service, and 365 drinking water schemes had been disrupted. In Shimla district, four people were killed in landslides, while parts of the city saw widespread damage from falling trees and road blockages. Education Minister Rohit Thakur said schools had been shut to ensure the safety of both students and teachers.

The apple harvest has also suffered, leaving farmers anxious. Relief and restoration efforts are underway, with the government working on a “war footing” to reopen routes and repair essential services.

Since the onset of the monsoon on 20 June, Himachal Pradesh has recorded losses exceeding ₹3,056 crore. At least 320 people have died, 40 remain missing, and 379 others have been injured. Hundreds of homes and thousands of livestock have also been lost during the season.
