India’s new Defence Public Sector Units (DPSUs) are set to lead the country’s push for modernisation and indigenisation in defence production, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said at a meeting of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence on Monday. The meeting, chaired by Singh, focused on the roles and functions of the DPSUs created after the corporatisation of the former Ordnance Factory Board. Committee members were briefed on key aspects including financial performance, modernisation efforts, capital expenditure, exports, new product development, and ongoing research and development projects. The Defence Minister praised the DPSUs for their progress in indigenising critical defence products, modernising production facilities, and promoting small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). He noted improvements in productivity, quality, and profitability since the corporatisation process.
Singh expressed confidence that the new DPSUs would set new benchmarks in quality and financial performance by adopting world-class technologies. “These DPSUs will make India ‘Aatmanirbhar’ in defence production,” he said.
Addressing HR-related concerns raised by some committee members, Singh assured that all issues stemming from the corporatisation process are being handled in consultation with relevant stakeholders. He welcomed suggestions and said they would be reviewed for implementation.
The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, and other senior MoD officials.
