The Indian Railways is preparing to implement a fare hike for passenger trains starting July 1, marking the first such increase in several years, officials confirmed on Monday. According to railway sources, the revised structure will see non-air-conditioned Mail and Express trains incur a one paisa per kilometre increase, while AC-class tickets will rise by two paise per kilometre.
The fare adjustment is aimed at generating additional revenue for operational improvements and is not expected to affect suburban train passengers, the officials clarified. The move comes amid a broader review of railway pricing policies, as the government pushes for modernisation of the vast rail network while managing rising costs. An official notification outlining the details of the fare revision is expected in the coming days.
