Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has urged citizens to prioritise national unity and uphold the values of Major Bob Khathing, a key figure in India’s North-East security and diplomacy. Speaking at the fifth edition of the Major Bob Khathing Memorial Event in Delhi Cantt, organised by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles and United Services Institution of India (USI), Singh paid tribute to Khathing’s contributions.
“India has been fortunate to have personalities like Major Khathing, who dedicated their lives to the nation’s integrity and security,” Singh said. He highlighted Khathing’s role in integrating Tawang into India without conflict, likening his efforts to those of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in national unification.
Singh drew parallels between Khathing’s work and the government’s move to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that both actions reinforced national unity without violence. He also praised Khathing’s role in establishing security institutions such as the Sashastra Seema Bal and the Nagaland Armed Police.
Addressing the government’s administrative policies, Singh said the ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’ approach has reduced bureaucratic barriers. He linked India’s growing diplomatic influence to the principles exemplified by Khathing, claiming that India is now a significant global player.
Rajnath Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to the North-East, citing infrastructure projects such as the Sela Tunnel and the Arunachal Frontier Highway. He noted that improved connectivity and economic development have contributed to reducing violence in the region.
The event featured a photo exhibition and a film on Major Khathing’s life. Singh, who inaugurated the ‘Museum of Valour’ dedicated to Khathing in October 2024, commended the resilience of the North-East’s residents and pledged continued support for the region’s development.
