Chandigarh, December 22

The Punjab government has made 56 smart services related to driving licences and vehicle registration available round the clock, as part of its push for faster and more citizen-centric governance, officials said on Monday. The services can be accessed online through the Parivahan portal, via Sewa Kendras during office hours, or by calling the 1076 helpline, allowing residents to apply from home without visiting government offices.

Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said the reforms, introduced under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, have improved transparency and reduced public inconvenience over the past three and a half years. He said streamlining procedures has also helped curb corruption in service delivery. According to the minister, all services are available 24×7 through the Parivahan portal using Aadhaar-based authentication. Smart cards for driving licences and vehicle registration certificates are printed at a single facility in Chandigarh and delivered to applicants’ homes via Speed Post. Digital documents stored on platforms such as mParivahan and DigiLocker are recognised as valid originals by enforcement agencies.

Bhullar also highlighted the continuation of free bus travel for women in state-run buses. Between 2022–23 and October 15, 2025, women undertook nearly 21 crore free journeys on Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS services, at a cost of about ₹1,157 crore to the state exchequer.

The government has also introduced an e-Learner’s Licence facility, enabling eligible applicants to obtain licences from home using Aadhaar. In addition, authorised motor vehicle dealers have been empowered to register new vehicles on the spot through Aadhaar-based systems, reducing delays in issuing registration certificates.

Separately, the minister said the state is operating 19 Volvo buses from various Punjab cities to the Delhi International Airport. He said the services, run by Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS, offer lower fares than private operators while providing comfortable travel options for passengers.
