Punjab Police tighten protocol after VIP escort car hits retired Lt Gen Hooda’s vehicle

Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, on Thursday said the force has taken serious note of an incident in which a VIP escort vehicle allegedly hit the car of Lt Gen DS Hooda (retd) and drove off on the Zirakpur–Ambala stretch. The matter surfaced details of the incident circulated on social media.Although The DGP did not mention Lt Gen Hooda by name, he said a recent social media post had brought to light an incident involving an escort vehicle on the Zirakpur–Ambala stretch.

Sharing details, DGP Yadav said that the Punjab Police has “zero tolerance” for misconduct, stressing that VIP protection is not only about safeguarding individuals under threat but also about upholding public dignity, safety and confidence on the roads. “VIP protection is a high-responsibility assignment that demands discipline, patience and respect for citizens,” he said.

The DGP also issued a set of immediate directions to all escort and traffic personnel. These include strict adherence to traffic rules during non-emergency movements, compliance with road safety norms, and ensuring smooth traffic flow with minimal disturbance to the public. Officials have also been instructed to maintain courteous and professional behaviour throughout movements involving protectees. The Police personnel have been told to exercise “utmost patience and restraint” in all circumstances. Escort in-charges must report any incidents without delay to the concerned authorities. Yadav has also ordered mandatory briefings within 48 hours for all district escort, pilot and traffic staff to reinforce standards of professional conduct and respectful behaviour on the road.
