Punjab Police have arrested four more alleged drug traffickers and recovered an additional 12kg of heroin, taking the total haul in a single case to 20.1kg. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the men were arrested in Amritsar and Tarn Taran. Officers also recovered a .30 bore pistol and a magazine from one of the accused.
Those detained were identified as Gurbhej Singh (50) and his son Gurdit Singh (22) of Narla village in Tarn Taran; Malkit Singh (50) of Dall village in Tarn Taran; and Gurjit Singh (29) of Kotli Saka village in Amritsar’s Ajnala area. The arrests follow the detention of Soni Singh, a known trafficker, and four of his associates last week, when police recovered 8.1kg of heroin. Investigators say both groups were part of a trans-border cartel linked to smugglers in Pakistan and were using WhatsApp for communication.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said Gurbhej Singh coordinated cross-border smuggling and used drone drop-offs in fields near the border, concealing consignments in cattle sheds. Ten kilograms of heroin were recovered from an earthen pit at his home, while a further 2kg and a pistol were found at Gurjit Singh’s residence. Officials said further arrests and recoveries are likely as investigations continue into the cartel’s forward and backward linkages.
An FIR under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered at Chheharta police station in Amritsar.
