Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) in Amritsar has foiled an alleged plot to carry out targeted killings in the state with the arrest of four suspected members of a gangster module, officials said on Monday.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the operation was part of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state. Two sophisticated weapons — a 9mm Glock pistol with five live cartridges and a .30 bore Star pistol with three cartridges — were recovered from the accused.

Those arrested have been identified as Jagpreet Singh alias Jagga and Mohammad Singh, both residents of Kazi Kot Kalan in Tarn Taran; and Lavish Nahar and Amarbir Singh, residents of Gate Hakiman in Amritsar.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the group was operating under the directions of a Portugal-based wanted gangster, who allegedly arranged the delivery of the weapons. “The accused had conducted reconnaissance of potential targets in Batala and Amritsar, and the recovered weapons were meant to be used in these attacks,” DGP Yadav said.

According to AIG SSOC Amritsar Sukhminder Singh Mann, the arrests were made following an intelligence-led operation based on specific inputs. He added that the accused had earlier transported weapons and money on multiple occasions at the behest of their handler abroad.

“Further investigations are underway to identify their wider network and trace both backward and forward linkages,” Mann said.

A case under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at the SSOC Police Station, Amritsar.
