The Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has busted a cross-border drug smuggling racket with the arrest of a drug smuggler and recovered 10 kg heroin from his possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as Harmandeep Singh from Ghumanpura village in Amritsar, was intercepted while riding a black Hero Splendor motorcycle. Police also impounded the vehicle as part of the operation. According to the DGP, Intelligence has indicated that Singh had links with Pakistani drug traffickers and had recently received a significant heroin consignment. Officers moved swiftly to apprehend him at a checkpoint on Ram Tirath Road, near Morh Village Kale in Amritsar, recovering the drugs in the process. Preliminary investigations suggest that Singh was in direct contact with a Pakistan-based trafficker, identified as Chacha Bawa, who allegedly used drones to transport heroin into India through the Attari sector. The Police are now working to trace the wider supply chain and identify additional suspects involved in the smuggling ring. “Further investigations are underway to establish backward and forward linkages in the case,” DGP Yadav said, adding that more arrests and drug seizures were likely in the coming days.
A case has been registered under sections 21, 25, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar.
