Chandigarh, April 10
The Punjab Police have arrested a key suspect in the killing of a social media influencer, nearly a year after the crime shocked the state. According to Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, fugitive Amritpal Singh Mehron was detained after being deported from the Middle East and taken into custody at Delhi’s international airport in the early hours of Friday.
In his post on X, the Punjab DGP said that the accused is the main conspirator in the murder of Kanchan Kumari, also known as Kamal Bhabhi, a social media personality whose death in June 2025 drew widespread attention. He said that Mehron, along with three associates, abducted and killed the victim before leaving her body inside a car parked near a hospital in Bathinda. The other accused in the case had already been arrested earlier.
Officials said Mehron fled India soon after the incident, prompting a coordinated manhunt involving Punjab Police, central agencies and a specialised extradition unit. Investigators eventually traced him to the Middle East, where he was detained before being sent back to India.
