Punjab Police arrest 66 terrorists, recover 257 drones in 2024: Sukhchain Singh Gill

Inspector General Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill said on Tuesday that in 2024, the Internal Security Wing dismantled 12 terror modules, arresting 66 terrorists and recovering significant arms and explosives, including two rifles, 76 pistols, two tiffin IEDs, 758 kg of RDX, four hand grenades, and 257 drones. Police also seized 185 kg of heroin, 24 pistols, one AK-47 rifle, and Rs 4.18 lakh in drug money dropped via drones. Additionally, there were 513 drone sightings reported throughout the year.

Stating that the Punjab Police achieved significant milestones in crime resolution and drug control in 2024, he said that many high-profile cases were solved this year, including attacks on police establishments and the killings of Hindu leader Vikas Bagga and ex-terrorist Rattandeep Singh. Other solved cases include grenade attacks in Chandigarh and Mansa, and a triple murder in Ferozepur.

While addressing the press conference he said that a decisive campaign against drug smuggling saw 8,935 arrests, 12,255 FIRs registered, and recoveries of 1,099 kg of heroin, 991 kg of opium, and Rs 14.73 crore in drug money. The Police also detained two notorious smugglers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs Act and forfeited properties worth Rs 335 crore.

He said that the Anti-Gangster Task Force dismantled 198 criminal modules, seizing 482 weapons, and arrested 559 gangsters. Punjab’s Internal Security Wing busted 12 terror modules, recovering explosives and drones. He also highlighted road safety initiatives reducing fatalities by 15.74%, cybercrime units registering 374 FIRs, and prisons fortifying security with AI-based systems. Recruitment and modernization efforts have strengthened the police force, with over 4,000 personnel joining in 2024.
