Barinder Kumar Goyal, Punjab’s Water Resources Minister, has announced the formation of a specialised committee to study cost-effective and innovative flood protection techniques from other states. The move aims to strengthen the state’s flood management infrastructure ahead of the next monsoon season.
Chairing a high-level review meeting in Chandigarh, the minister directed officials to ensure that all flood protection and desilting works are completed on time. He said that adopting practical and economical models could help Punjab mitigate flood damage more efficiently.
Goyal expressed concern over recurring flooding in Baupur Island and instructed officials to identify technical solutions to provide permanent relief to local residents. He also asked for long-term measures to address waterlogging in other vulnerable areas.
The minister emphasised that field execution of desilting must begin early to maintain the natural flow of rivers and drains. He directed that encroachments and plantations obstructing river courses should be removed without delay.
Officials briefed the minister on breach repair works carried out during recent floods. Goyal praised field officers and district administrations for their prompt action.
Senior officials, including Krishan Kumar, Hardeep Singh Mendiratta and Vijay Kumar Garg, attended the meeting to discuss flood prevention strategies and water management plans for the upcoming season.
