Chandigarh, April 3
Punjab Congress leader Khushbaz Singh Jattana was killed on Thursday evening after a truck rammed into his stationary SUV in Sonipat district, police said.
The accident occurred on the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressway when the SUV, reportedly halted due to a deflated tyre, was hit from behind by the truck, officials added.
Jattana (45), who had contested the 2017 and 2022 Punjab Assembly elections from Talwandi Sabo, was serving as the district Congress president for Bathinda Rural. His driver, Parminder Singh, also died in the collision, while his gunman sustained injuries, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Rai) Vipin Ahlawat.
Police said Jattana’s body has been kept at the Sonipat Civil Hospital. The truck driver fled the scene following the incident, though authorities have identified the vehicle and launched efforts to apprehend the accused.
Condolences poured in from party leaders following the tragic incident. Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring expressed deep grief, describing Jattana as a “dynamic and promising young leader” whose loss is “extremely devastating” for the party.
Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa also mourned the untimely death, calling it a heartbreaking loss of a dedicated and rising political figure. He extended condolences to Jattana’s family, friends, and supporters.
Police said further investigation into the incident is underway.
