Punjab allocates Rs 1,170 crore for widows, destitute women

Punjab Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development, Dr Baljit Kaur, has announced that the state has allocated ₹1,170 crore for the financial assistance scheme supporting widows and destitute women in 2025-26. She said that up to August 2025, ₹593.14 crore had already been disbursed directly to 6.66 lakh women beneficiaries. “The Mann Government’s aim is not just financial support, but to empower women to become confident and self-reliant,” Dr Baljit Kaur said. The minister stressed that the initiative is designed to build resilience and hope among women facing difficult circumstances. She said the assistance helps women not only sustain their families but also invest in the future of their children. She added that empowering women through such schemes strengthens their role in families and society, enabling them to contribute more actively to community life.

Highlighting improvements in delivery, Dr Baljit Kaur said the government had ensured that payments are credited directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts without delay. She said this had enhanced both transparency and trust in the system. Concluding her remarks, Dr Baljit Kaur said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab was moving towards becoming a socially secure, empowered and inclusive state.
