Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has sought urgent intervention from India’s IT Minister over what she described as a growing misuse of artificial intelligence tools on social media to sexualise and digitally undress women using their images without consent.

In a letter dated January 2, addressed to IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chaturvedi flagged a disturbing trend on the social media platform X, where users are allegedly exploiting AI features such as Grok to manipulate women’s photographs, reduce their clothing digitally and sexualise them.

She said the practice involves both fake accounts and the unauthorised targeting of women who post their own photographs online, calling it a “gross misuse of AI” and a serious violation of women’s privacy and dignity. The Rajya Sabha MP warned that such acts were not only unethical but could also amount to criminal offences.

Chaturvedi, a member of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications, urged the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to take up the issue strongly with big technology companies. She said AI-driven platforms must be required to build safeguards and guardrails into their products to ensure they are not used to harass or exploit women.

“Our country cannot be a bystander to women’s dignity being violated publicly and digitally with zero consequences under the garb of creativity and innovation,” she wrote, stressing that accountability must rest with technology firms as well as platform operators. The MP also cautioned that similar patterns were emerging across other major tech platforms, which she said were operating with little effective oversight. While welcoming the role of AI in innovation and ease of living, she underlined that its use to demean or target women must not be tolerated.

Chaturvedi said she hoped MeitY would take up the matter as a priority and ensure that strong regulatory and technical measures are enforced to prevent the proliferation of such content online.
