Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides on Monday conferred the country’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a ceremony held in Nicosia, President Christodoulides praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and his contribution to global peace and cooperation. The award is named after Cyprus’s first President, Archbishop Makarios III, and is bestowed on foreign leaders for their outstanding service to the Republic.

Accepting the honour, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to the President, the Government, and the people of Cyprus. He dedicated the recognition to India’s 1.4 billion citizens, calling it a tribute to the enduring friendship between the two nations.

“This award reflects the values we share and the deep-rooted trust between our countries,” said Mr Modi. He also invoked India’s ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – “The world is one family” – saying it underpins India’s commitment to global peace, unity, and development.

The Indian leader noted that the award was not just a personal honour, but a symbol of the two nations’ joint commitment to peace, security, sovereignty, and prosperity.

Mr Modi’s visit to Cyprus is part of his broader diplomatic outreach in Europe, aimed at deepening bilateral ties and boosting economic and strategic cooperation.
