President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday called on universities to strengthen ties with industry and focus on future-readiness, urging policymakers to ensure that education remains application-based. Speaking at the convocation of Panjab University in Chandigarh, she stressed that education should equip students with the skills and mindset to navigate an increasingly competitive world.
“The coming times will be challenging, and competition will continue to intensify. It is crucial for students to develop a positive mindset and advanced skill-set to meet these challenges head-on,” Murmu said. She underscored the importance of acquiring and continuously updating knowledge of emerging technologies, adding that their effective use would be essential for success.
Reflecting on Panjab University’s 140-year legacy, the President lauded its contributions to higher education, research, sports, and culture. She noted that the institution has won the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy a record 17 times, a testament to its sporting excellence. Highlighting recent achievements, she praised university students Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh for securing medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, bringing pride to the country.
Murmu also commended the university’s efforts in fostering academia-industry collaborations, emphasising the need for institutions to bridge the gap between education and practical application.
Addressing the graduating students, she described studying at Panjab University as a privilege and encouraged them to uphold its legacy. “This university has produced some of the most distinguished personalities, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, Nobel laureates, and leaders across various fields. It is now your responsibility to build on this tradition,” she told them. She urged students to make meaningful contributions to society, the nation, and the world while pursuing their personal ambitions.
