President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down from his post late Monday evening, citing medical advice and the need to prioritise his health. The decision came as a surprise, with Dhankhar announcing his immediate resignation after consultations with his doctors. His departure brings an abrupt end to his role as Vice-President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

In a formal letter addressed to the President , Dhankhar said his decision was made “in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution” and expressed deep gratitude for the support he received during his tenure. “I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency – the Hon’ble President of India – for her unwavering support and the soothing, wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure,” Dhankhar wrote.

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, describing their cooperation and support as “invaluable.” Dhankhar said he had learned much during his time in office and expressed heartfelt appreciation for Members of Parliament, whose “warmth, trust, and affection” he said would remain embedded in his memory.

Reflecting on his time in the second-highest constitutional office, Dhankhar called it a “privilege and satisfaction” to witness India’s remarkable economic growth and global rise.

“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements,” he said, adding that he has “unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” he wrote.

Dhankhar, who took office in August 2022, had previously served as the Governor of West Bengal and held various positions in state and central governments. His resignation comes at a time of significant political and economic transformation in the country.
