Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the ninth edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025, calling it “the best time to invest, innovate, and make in India.” The event, Asia’s largest telecom, media and technology forum, was held at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. Addressing innovators, entrepreneurs, and global industry leaders, Modi said India’s technology sector was entering a “golden era” driven by youth, startups, and a government committed to supporting innovation.

“India’s technological future rests in capable hands,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the country’s progress from struggling with 2G to achieving near-universal 5G coverage showed how far it had come. The Prime Minister highlighted that the India Mobile Congress has grown beyond telecom to become a major digital technology platform for Asia. He credited India’s “tech-savvy mindset” and “young talent” for driving its success.

Modi said the government’s funding initiatives — including the Telecom Technology Development Fund and the Digital Communications Innovations Square — were backing startups in areas such as 6G, optical communications, semiconductors, and quantum technologies. He also pointed to government-financed test beds for 5G, 6G, and tera-hertz technologies, designed to strengthen research and product development in collaboration with top academic institutions.

India’s mobile phone production, he noted, has grown 28 times since 2014, with exports up by 127 times. Electronics manufacturing has increased sixfold, creating millions of jobs. Citing data from a major smartphone manufacturer, Modi said 45 Indian companies are now part of its supply chain, generating 3.5 lakh direct jobs. “The country that once lagged behind in 2G is now leading in 5G and preparing for 6G,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also hailed the launch of India’s Made-in-India 4G stack, calling it a landmark achievement that makes India one of only five countries with this capability. On the day of its launch, around one lakh towers were activated simultaneously, connecting over two crore citizens, including in remote regions.

He said the indigenous 4G and 5G stack would not only serve India’s domestic needs but also strengthen its global digital outreach as part of the ‘India 6G Vision 2030’. Modi further underlined the importance of the new Telecommunications Act, which replaces colonial-era laws. The act, he said, serves as a facilitator rather than a regulator, making approvals faster and improving the ease of doing business.

With streamlined permissions and a rapidly expanding fibre and tower network, Modi said India’s telecom infrastructure was now ready for the future — and called on global investors to be part of the country’s digital transformation.

“This is the best time to invest, innovate, and make in India,” Modi concluded.
