New Delhi, July 22
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday wished former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar “good health” after his sudden resignation from office, calling attention to the veteran politician’s long public service. The Prime Minister posted on X: “Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.”

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu has formally accepted Dhankhar’s resignation. Citing medical advice and the need to focus on his health, Dhankhar’s decision to step down came without prior indication, catching political observers off guard on Monday evening. His departure brings an abrupt close to a tenure that began in August 2022, lasting less than two years in the country’s second-highest constitutional post.

In a formal letter to the President, Dhankhar wrote that his decision was made “in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution” and expressed gratitude for her “unwavering support” during his time in office. He referred to their working relationship as “soothing” and “wonderful”.

He also thanked Prime Minister Modi and the Council of Ministers for their cooperation, calling it “invaluable”. Reflecting on his tenure, Dhankhar wrote: “As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements… I have unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”

Dhankhar described his experience as Vice-President as a “privilege and satisfaction”, particularly in witnessing India’s economic transformation and enhanced global stature. He also extended his appreciation to Members of Parliament, noting that their “warmth, trust, and affection” would remain deeply etched in his memory. Before becoming Vice-President, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal and held various positions in both state and central governments.
