News Delhi, August 6
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit China on 31 August to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, where he is expected to hold key bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Reliable sources have indicated that a formal bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin is confirmed — marking their first one-on-one dialogue in over a year. The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan.
Modi’s visit to China is being viewed as strategically significant, particularly in light of recent global economic shifts. The meeting comes amid growing concerns in New Delhi over US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian exports — a move seen as indicative of Washington’s increasingly transactional approach toward India.
The India-Russia bilateral is expected to focus on defence cooperation, energy trade, and strategic alignment on global platforms.
The SCO Summit is also likely to see high-level discussions on regional security, counter-terrorism, and the evolving geopolitical order.
