New Delhi, February 13
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Washington, D.C., for high-level talks with US leaders, aiming to strengthen trade, defence, and economic ties while avoiding potential tariffs. Modi is set to meet Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk at 10 p.m. IST, with discussions likely to include the expansion of Starlink satellite internet in India, as well as artificial intelligence and trade.
Upon arrival, Modi met U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and congratulated her on her confirmation. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he noted her strong support for India-U.S. relations and said their discussions covered key aspects of the strategic partnership. Gabbard, a practicing Hindu, is expected to address security issues with the Indian delegation.
Modi’s visit comes at a pivotal moment for bilateral relations. He will hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at 2:30 a.m. IST on February 14 in both restricted and delegation-level formats, followed by a joint press briefing. Trade, tariffs, defence collaboration, and immigration policies are expected to be key topics. Modi is one of the first world leaders to meet Trump since he assumed office as the 47th U.S. president.
The Indian diaspora gave Modi a warm reception upon his arrival despite the winter chill. Modi acknowledged their welcome in a post on X, expressing gratitude. He is staying at Blair House, the U.S. presidential guest house, where the Indian flag was raised ahead of his visit.
His meeting with Trump follows recent engagements between the U.S. president and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
