Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal on January 20 to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for major national highway projects aimed at improving road connectivity in the state. At a public event in Ranaghat, in Nadia district, Modi is scheduled to inaugurate and launch projects worth about ₹3,200 crore (£300m). He will also address a gathering at the site.
Among the key projects is the inauguration of a 66.7km four-lane stretch of the Barajaguli–Krishnanagar section of National Highway 34 in Nadia district. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the four-laning of the 17.6km Barasat–Barajaguli section of the same highway in North 24 Parganas district. The upgraded highway corridor is expected to serve as a crucial link between Kolkata and Siliguri, improving access to northern West Bengal and neighbouring regions. Officials say the projects could cut travel time by nearly two hours, ease traffic congestion and reduce vehicle operating costs. The government says the highway upgrades will strengthen regional connectivity, support trade and tourism, and contribute to economic growth across West Bengal and adjoining areas.
