Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday criticised Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal over his claim that “poison” is being mixed in the Yamuna river, calling it an act of desperation ahead of the Delhi elections. Addressing a rally in Kartar Nagar, Modi blamed the AAP government for Delhi’s water crisis, alleging it had failed to clean the Yamuna despite repeated election promises.

“They sought votes three times to clean the river and are now blaming Haryana for poisoning Delhi’s water. This is dishonesty,” Modi said. He claimed AAP wanted Delhi residents to suffer, forcing Purvanchali migrants to celebrate Chhath Puja in unsanitary conditions.

Modi asserted that Delhi had rejected excuses and false promises, demanding a “double-engine” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government to end the tanker mafia, ensure housing, and improve infrastructure. Confident of victory, he declared, “On February 5, AAP-da Jayegi, BJP Aayegi!”

He praised BJP’s election manifesto, saying it would uplift women, students, and the middle class. He criticized AAP and Congress for Delhi’s poor infrastructure, citing traffic congestion, broken roads, pollution, and water shortages. Modi said the BJP had delivered on promises elsewhere, bringing electricity and tap water to rural homes. “If we can do it in villages, why can’t we ensure clean water in Delhi?” he asked.

Slamming AAP’s governance, Modi said that the Delhi Assembly sat for just 74 days in five years, passing only 14 laws—five of which focused on legislators’ salaries and pensions. “Instead of solving issues, they turned the Assembly into a battleground for petty politics,” he said.

He vowed to modernize Delhi with expanded metro networks, expressways, and electric vehicles. Promising housing for slum dwellers, he said, “I don’t have a home, but my dream is for every poor person to have one.”

Dismissing claims that the BJP would end welfare schemes, Modi said his government had continued Congress-era programs like MGNREGA while eliminating corruption. He promised to restore pensions for the elderly and provide financial support to pregnant women and domestic workers.

Modi warned that AAP and Congress were secretly planning a post-election alliance. “They want to ensure either an AAP or Congress MLA wins to later form a government together,” he said, urging voters to support BJP’s lotus symbol.
