Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the Uniform Civil Code and the proposed “One Nation, One Election” system remain important goals for the BJP. He added that both topics are now being discussed seriously and positively across the country.

Speaking to party workers online on the BJP’s foundation day, Modi said the party’s larger mission is still ongoing, even though it has already reached several major policy and political milestones while in power.

He said, “Our mission is still continuing,” specifically mentioning the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections at the same time. He added that the country is moving in a positive direction on both topics.

The Uniform Civil Code aims to create a single set of personal laws for all citizens on issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, rather than having different laws based on religion.

The “One Nation, One Election” proposal would have Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections held simultaneously. The BJP says this could lower election costs and reduce disruptions to governance, but opposition parties and constitutional experts have criticized the idea.

Modi used the occasion to highlight the BJP’s ideological journey. He said party workers have faced years of struggle, including during the Emergency, and described political repression under Congress rule.

He also said BJP workers have made sacrifices in states like West Bengal and Kerala. He accused political rivals in those states of letting violence become part of the political culture.

The prime minister also highlighted what he called the BJP’s record of fulfilling long-standing promises. He listed achievements such as removing colonial-era laws, building the new Parliament, giving 10% reservation to economically weaker sections in the general category, banning triple talaq, passing the Citizenship Amendment Act, and building the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Modi said these decisions show what he called the BJP’s “honest efforts” to address tough national issues.

He said the BJP is different from other political parties because its workers see the organization as something deeply personal and emotional, not just a political platform.

He said, “That is why foundation day is not just a political programme. It is an emotional moment for every worker.”

These remarks are likely to intensify political debate over the Uniform Civil Code and simultaneous elections, which remain central to the BJP’s long-term political and legislative plans.
