PM Modi: Pope Francis will be remembered for compassion, service

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, paying tribute to the pontiff’s lifelong dedication to compassion, service, and spiritual leadership. “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” Modi said in a statement. “In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community.”The Prime Minister described Pope Francis as “a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage” whose legacy would be remembered by millions across the world.

Reflecting on the Pope’s early life, Modi said that from a young age, the pontiff had committed himself to the teachings of Jesus Christ, tirelessly working for the poor and marginalised. “For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope,” Modi said. Recalling his own encounters with the Pope, Modi said he had been deeply inspired by the Pope’s vision for inclusive and holistic development. He also highlighted the Pope’s warm regard for India.

“His affection for the people of India will always be cherished,” the Prime Minister said. “May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace.”
