Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the iconic Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, a landmark project constructed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to enhance connectivity and boost regional development. The 12-km project, built at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore, includes the 6.4-km Sonamarg main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads. Located at an altitude of 8,650 feet, the tunnel ensures all-weather access between Srinagar and Sonamarg en route to Leh, bypassing landslide-prone areas and ensuring safer connectivity to the strategically critical Ladakh region.

Sharing details, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari described the project as a significant step in boosting regional connectivity and reducing travel time. “The tunnel facilitates seamless movement of local agricultural goods from Srinagar to Leh, fostering quicker connectivity and enhancing economic opportunities,” he said.

“This project is a game-changer for tourism, transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination while promoting winter tourism, adventure sports, and local livelihoods,” Modi said.

Alongside the Zojila Tunnel, expected to be completed by 2028, the Sonamarg Tunnel will reduce the route length between Srinagar and Ladakh from 49 km to 43 km and increase vehicle speeds from 30 km/h to 70 km/h. The enhanced connectivity will bolster defense logistics and drive economic and socio-cultural integration across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
