Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly condemned what he described as a “ghastly terrorist attack” at Australia’s Bondi Beach, where people had gathered to mark the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Expressing deep grief over the incident, Modi extended condolences on behalf of the people of India to the families of those who lost their lives, and said India stood firmly with Australia in a moment of profound sorrow.
According to local media reports, at least 16 people were killed and around 40 others injured, some of them seriously, including two police officers. The alleged attackers were identified as a father and son of Pakistani origin, Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24. The father was killed at the scene, while the son remains in a critical condition in hospital.
Reiterating India’s long-held position, the Prime Minister said the country maintains zero tolerance towards terrorism and supports the global fight against all forms and manifestations of it.
In a post on X, Modi wrote that India “strongly condemns” the attack and stands in solidarity with the people of Australia during this hour of grief.
