The Delhi Police registered a case against Leader of Opposition(LoP), Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday following a complaint by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing him of “physical assault and incitement” during a scuffle on Parliament premises earlier in the day. The incident occurred during protests linked to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Tensions flared between MPs of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA bloc, with both sides alleging misconduct.
Three NDA MPs, including Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj, lodged a police complaint against Gandhi, citing charges such as attempted murder and causing grievous harm. Thakur alleged that Gandhi incited violence and assaulted MPs near Parliament’s Makar Dwar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to two BJP MPs, Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, who were injured in the incident. Sarangi, 69, suffered a head injury and was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated both MPs were stable but would remain hospitalized for a few days.
BJP president JP Nadda condemned Gandhi’s actions, labeling them a breach of parliamentary privilege and an affront to democracy. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju demanded a public apology from Gandhi, urging Congress to uphold parliamentary decorum. Rahul Gandhi denied the allegations, accusing BJP MPs of attempting to block and push him as he entered Parliament. He claimed the altercation was a reaction to the BJP’s “assaults on the Constitution” and the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar.
The incident has further deepened divisions between the government and opposition, raising concerns over parliamentary conduct.
