New Delhi, June 28

The central government has appointed senior Indian Police Service officer Parag Jain as the new chief of the Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW), India’s external intelligence agency. He will take charge on 1 July 2025 for a fixed tenure of two years, succeeding incumbent chief Ravi Sinha, whose term ends on 30 June.

Jain, a 1989-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre, has held several key positions in his career, including serving as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Chandigarh and in various senior roles in the Punjab Police. He is also credited with playing a significant role in Operation Sindoor, a classified national security operation.

In an official communication dated June 28, Manisha Saxena, Secretary of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and Establishment Officer, confirmed the decision. The letter stated:

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Parag Jain, IPS (PB:89) to the post of Secretary, Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW) under Cabinet Secretariat for a tenure of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in terms of provisions of FR 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.”

Known for his disciplined and low-profile working style, Jain is expected to focus on strengthening India’s global intelligence reach and enhancing cooperation with international partners. His prior experience in both field operations and senior command roles is seen as a strong asset for the top post in India’s foreign intelligence setup.
