Chandigarh, March 17

A suspect linked to the grenade attack on Amritsar’s Thakur Dwara temple was shot dead during an encounter with Punjab Police on Monday, while another managed to escape. Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on X (formerly Twitter) that Amritsar Commissionerate Police acted on intelligence to track down those responsible for the March 15 attack. An FIR had been registered at PS Chheharta under the Explosive Substances Act, leading to an intelligence-driven operation to locate the suspects.

Sharing details, the DGP said the police confronted them in Rajasansi, where the suspects opened fire, injuring Head Constable Gurpreet Singh and striking Inspector Amolak Singh’s turban. Officers returned fire, injuring one suspect, who later died at Civil Hospital. The second suspect managed to flee, and police are continuing their search, he added. A fresh FIR is being filed at PS Airport.
