The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has dismissed reports circulating on social media that two-wheelers will be charged tolls at highway plazas across the country. In a statement, NHAI clarified that no user fee is levied on two-wheelers at toll plazas on national highways or expressways, nor is there any proposal to introduce such charges. Toll collection, the authority said, is governed by the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, under which only vehicles with four or more wheels are required to pay. These categories include cars, jeeps, vans, light motor vehicles, light commercial vehicles, buses, trucks, heavy construction machinery, earthmoving equipment, multi-axle vehicles and oversized vehicles.
