New Delhi, January 13
India’s Department of Science and Technology has inaugurated a new astronomical observatory atop Panchet Hill in Purulia of West Bengal. Set up by the S.N. Bose Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBCBS), the observatory aims to advance astronomical research, provide hands-on training for students, and fill a critical longitudinal gap in global astronomical observatories. Located at an elevation of 600 meters and approximately 86°E longitude, the Panchet observatory is strategically positioned to observe transient phenomena lasting minutes to hours. This region, spanning from the Arctic to Antarctica, has few such facilities, making the observatory a vital addition to the global network.

The project, initiated after land acquisition in 2018, involved site evaluation and the installation of a 14-inch telescope for scientific observations. SNBCBS has partnered with Sidhu Kanu Birsa University to jointly operate the facility. During the virtual inauguration, SNBCBS Director Dr. Tanusri Saha-Dasgupta hailed the observatory as a landmark achievement in observational astronomy. Dr. Pabitra Kumar Chakrabarty, Vice Chancellor of SKB University, emphasized its significance for students in the Purulia district, often considered underdeveloped. Department of Science and Technology Financial Adviser Viswajit Sahay highlighted the potential for the observatory to create an ecosystem of scientific growth in its vicinity. The inauguration was attended by scientists, officials, and academics, marking a new chapter in Indian astronomy.
