Mumbai boat tragedy: PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial aid for the victims of a tragic boat collision near Mumbai Harbour. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the families of those who lost their lives, while the injured will receive ₹50,000. “The boat mishap in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. Those affected are being assisted by the authorities,” PM Modi wrote on X.

The incident occurred on Wednesday around 4 pm when an Indian Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control due to a malfunction and collided with the passenger ferry Neel Kamal. The ferry capsized near Karanja, resulting in 13 fatalities. The Navy confirmed that 99 passengers were rescued and search operations continue for others.

The Navy deployed extensive resources for rescue efforts, including four helicopters, 11 naval crafts, one Coast Guard vessel, and three marine police boats. Survivors have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her grief, stating, “I am shocked and saddened to learn of the accident. My condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. I pray for the swift success of rescue operations and quick recovery of survivors.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also shared his condolences, saying, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the collision. Injured personnel, including naval and civilian members, are receiving urgent medical care. Extensive search efforts are ongoing by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.”
