Modi, Putin hold talks on economy, energy and Ukraine

New Delhi, September 1

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin of China, on Monday. The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in the economic, financial and energy sectors, expressing satisfaction over the steady growth of ties. Prime Minister Modi described the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” with Russia as an important pillar of regional and global stability.  The discussions also covered regional and global issues, with Ukraine featuring prominently. Modi reiterated India’s support for recent peace initiatives, stressing the need to speed up efforts towards a ceasefire and a lasting settlement.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their partnership further. Modi also said he was looking forward to welcoming Putin to India for the 23rd Annual Summit later this year.
