New Delhi, March 3
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked World Wildlife Day with a visit to Gir, home to the iconic Asiatic lion, highlighting conservation successes and community contributions. During a safari on Monday morning, Modi shared his experiences on social media, recalling his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister when critical conservation initiatives were launched. “In the last many years, collective efforts have ensured that the population of Asiatic lions is rising steadily,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also praised the efforts of local tribal communities and women in preserving the lions’ habitat, describing their role as “equally commendable.” The Gir National Park in Gujarat is the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion, and conservation projects have led to a steady increase in their population, a significant win for Indian wildlife conservation.
Prime Minister Modi also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to preserving global biodiversity, marking World Wildlife Day with a call for collective action to safeguard wildlife. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi said: “Today, on #WorldWildlifeDay, let’s reiterate our commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet. “Every species plays a vital role—let’s safeguard their future for generations to come!” he added. The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s contributions to wildlife conservation, celebrating national efforts in protecting endangered species and promoting ecological sustainability. World Wildlife Day, observed annually on March 3, emphasizes global awareness of wildlife preservation and the importance of maintaining balanced ecosystems.
