The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has resolved to commemorate and honour the sacrifices of the many individuals who bravely opposed the Emergency and its efforts to undermine the spirit of the Indian Constitution. The government noted that this subversion began as early as 1974, with forceful attempts to suppress democratic movements such as the Navnirman Andolan and the Sampoorna Kranti Abhiyan.

The Emergency, declared in 1975, led to widespread curbs on civil liberties, press freedom and political opposition. The Cabinet referred to it as “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” — the day the Constitution was undermined. “The Republic and democratic spirit of India were attacked, federalism was weakened, and fundamental rights and human dignity were suspended,” the Cabinet said.

The ministers reaffirmed India’s faith in its Constitution and democratic ethos, calling on citizens — especially the younger generation — to learn from those who resisted authoritarianism. “India, as the Mother of Democracy, stands as an example of preserving and safeguarding constitutional values,” the statement read.

As the nation marks 50 years since the Emergency, the Cabinet urged all Indians to renew their commitment to the Constitution and the principles it enshrines.
