Microsoft Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and announced that the technology major would invest more than US$17.5 billion (approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore) in India to strengthen Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure and capabilities. The commitment marks Microsoft’s largest investment in Asia to date.

In a post shared on X after the meeting, Nadella said the company would support India’s AI ambitions by expanding infrastructure, enhancing skill development, and building sovereign capabilities essential for an “AI-first future”. Prime Minister Modi said he had a “very productive discussion” with the Microsoft chief, expressing confidence in India’s emergence as a global AI leader. Welcoming the investment decision, he noted that the country’s young population would utilise the opportunity to drive innovation and deploy AI solutions for societal benefit.

“When it comes to AI, the world is optimistic about India,” the Prime Minister said in response to Nadella’s post. “Happy to see India being the place where Microsoft will make its largest-ever investment in Asia. The youth of India will harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet.”
