A special court in Mumbai has acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, including BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit, citing insufficient evidence. The blast, which occurred on September 29, 2008, killed six and injured over 100 in a crowded market area near a mosque in Malegaon of Maharashtra. The court ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a clear link between the accused and the bomb that was strapped to a motorcycle. The judge noted that the bike’s ownership could not be conclusively traced to Thakur, while no material evidence connected Purohit to procuring RDX or assembling the bomb.

“The prosecution could not present cogent evidence. Conviction cannot be based on morality,” Special Judge AK Lahoti said. The court added that terrorism must not be seen through the lens of religion.
