The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has described the results of Maharashtra’s urban local body elections as a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Reacting to the outcome, BJP state president and former assembly speaker Dr Rajeev Bindal on Friday said that the results showed that Modi remained the country’s most trusted leader, with voters continuing to back his policies and style of governance. He pointed to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, India’s largest civic body, where the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secured 130 seats to claim a clear majority. In contrast, the Congress party won just 14 seats in the 230-member corporation, a result Dr Bindal said reflected the party’s shrinking support base.
Dr Bindal added that across Maharashtra, the BJP-led alliance had won a majority in 23 of the 29 municipal corporations that went to polls. He said the results, coming after similar trends in Bihar, sent a clear message that voters favoured the leadership of the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The BJP leader said the Congress’s poor performance, both in Bihar and Maharashtra, highlighted public dissatisfaction with its leadership and policies. He described the civic poll outcome as a broader public verdict against what he called the Congress’s negative politics.
Dr Bindal said the BJP would accept the mandate with humility and continue to work towards development at both the state and national levels.
