Mahakumbh Stampede: 30 dead, 60 injured, says UP CM Yogi

At least 30 pilgrims were killed and 60 injured in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj early Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in the evening. Yogi Adityanath ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident and announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased.

The incident occurred between 1 am and 2 am when pilgrims attempted to breach barricades to take a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya.

Adityanath said the situation was under control and urged devotees to remain calm. Officials estimate eight to ten crore pilgrims are present at various ghats, with three crore took holy bath in the morning. Adityanath urged devotees to follow instructions and avoid overcrowding at Sangam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the tragedy. Modi called it “extremely sad” and assured full support to the state government. Shah said he was in constant touch with Adityanath and local authorities to ensure medical aid for the injured.
