Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised the Maha Kumbh, calling it not just a record-breaking gathering but a powerful foundation for preserving India’s cultural and spiritual heritage for centuries to come. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Modi reflected on the 45-day festival in Prayagraj, where millions of devotees gathered in an overwhelming display of faith. “The Maha Kumbh has concluded. The Maha Yagya of unity has been completed. The way 140 crore Indians came together at this festival is truly inspiring,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the event has drawn interest from management and policy experts worldwide. “The Maha Kumbh of Prayagraj is now a subject of research. India, proud of its heritage, is moving forward with renewed energy. This moment marks a turning point in our nation’s journey,” he said.

Modi further described the gathering as an embodiment of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, a vision of national unity and self-confidence. The Uttar Pradesh government reported that over 66 crore devotees have taken a dip at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.

The origins of the Kumbh Mela trace back to Hindu mythology, with references in ancient scriptures to the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), during which drops of the nectar of immortality fell at four locations—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The Maha Kumbh, occurring once every 144 years in Prayagraj, is deeply embedded in India’s religious and historical traditions.

With records dating back to the Maurya and Gupta periods, the festival has evolved into a global spiritual phenomenon, earning recognition from UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. The event’s grandeur includes sacred bathing rituals (Shahi Snans), spiritual discourses, and vibrant cultural processions, reaffirming India’s deep-rooted spiritual heritage.
