Six million devotees took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Monday to mark Paush Purnima, the start of the Maha Kumbh Mela, billed as the world’s largest religious gathering. The festival, held every 12 years, runs from January 13 to February 26 and is expected to draw 400 million visitors. Around 5 million pilgrims and sadhus plan to stay in camps throughout the event, Uttar Pradesh government said.
The confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers is believed to cleanse devotees of sins and offer spiritual liberation (moksha). Uttar Pradesh Police said extensive security and traffic arrangements have been implemented to ensure a smooth experience for the influx of visitors.
“A very special day for crores of people who cherish Bharatiya values and culture! Maha Kumbh embodies India’s timeless spiritual heritage and celebrates faith and harmony,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the event as “a confluence of cultures, faith, and harmony,” adding that it promotes the welfare of humanity and showcases the richness of Sanatan values.
