Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is anticipated to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party as early as Monday, according to three sources cited by news outlet The Globe and Mail. This comes amid mounting internal dissent within his party and a sharp decline in public support, with polls suggesting the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, are poised to oust the Liberals from power.
The Globe and Mail quoting the source reported that Trudeau is likely to step down before a crucial national caucus meeting on Wednesday. While the exact timing of his announcement remains uncertain, one source noted that Trudeau is keen to make his decision public before facing Liberal MPs, aiming to avoid the perception that he was ousted by his own caucus.
Uncertainty surrounds the Liberal Party’s plans to navigate this leadership transition. It remains unclear whether Trudeau will step down immediately or continue as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen. The Liberal Party’s national executive, which oversees leadership decisions, is expected to meet later this week, likely following the caucus session, The Globe and Mail reported.
“The truth is that we don’t know and won’t know until Trudeau addresses the nation. At this stage, there is widespread conjecture, but no certainty about whether he will make an announcement to begin the workweek,” The Toronto Sun reported.
